CTET 2025 — Frequently Asked Questions

What is CTET and who conducts it?

CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is a national-level teacher eligibility exam conducted by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is held twice a year (typically July and December) and qualifies candidates to teach in central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV), Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS), Sainik Schools, and other centrally-funded schools anywhere in India.

CTET was introduced under the Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE Act), which made it mandatory for all teacher appointments in central schools from 2011 onwards.

What is the difference between CTET Paper I and Paper II?

CTET Paper I — for candidates who wish to teach Classes 1 to 5 (primary level).
Sections: Child Development & Pedagogy (30), Language I (30), Language II (30), Mathematics (30), Environmental Studies (30). Total: 150 marks.

CTET Paper II — for candidates who wish to teach Classes 6 to 8 (upper primary level).
Sections: Child Development & Pedagogy (30), Language I (30), Language II (30), and either Mathematics & Science (60) or Social Studies / Social Science (60). Total: 150 marks.

Candidates who wish to be eligible to teach Classes 1 through 8 must clear both papers.

What is the passing mark for CTET 2025?

The minimum qualifying marks for CTET are:

General category: 60% — that is, 90 out of 150 marks.

SC / ST / OBC / PwD: 55% — that is, 82.5 marks (rounded to 83).

There is no negative marking in CTET. Once qualified, the CTET certificate is valid for a lifetime (the CBSE made the certificate permanent from 2021 onwards, removing the earlier 7-year validity).

How many times can you attempt CTET?

There is no limit on the number of CTET attempts. Candidates can appear as many times as they wish until they qualify. CTET is typically conducted twice a year (July and December), giving two opportunities annually. There is also no upper age limit for attempting CTET — candidates must only meet the minimum educational qualification requirements.

Is CTET valid for central government schools only?

CTET qualification is mandatory for teaching in central government schools (KV, NVS, Sainik Schools, and other central schools). However, several state governments also accept CTET scores for their own state government school recruitment, though many states conduct their own State TET.

CTET is also accepted by many private schools across India. Always check the specific recruitment notification for the school or state you are applying to.

How to prepare for CTET in 3 months?

Month 1 — Child Development & Pedagogy (CDP): This carries 30 marks and is the same in Paper I and II. Master Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Gardner, Bandura, NCF 2005, NEP 2020, and RTE Act 2009. CDP is high-yield because it is tested in both papers.

Month 2 — Subject-specific pedagogy: Focus on your subject area — Maths pedagogy, EVS pedagogy, Language pedagogy (for Paper I), or Maths/Science or Social Science pedagogy (for Paper II). Study NCF 2005 subject-specific chapters.

Month 3 — Full mock tests and revision: Solve at least 5 full CTET previous year papers under timed conditions. Identify weak areas and revise. Practise daily MCQs on Brain Grain.

Throughout: Practise 20–30 MCQs daily. Focus on scenario-based questions, which are a CTET hallmark.

Can I use CTET certificate for Tamil Nadu state schools?

CTET and TNTET are separate exams for different school systems:

CTET qualifies you to teach in central government schools (KV, NVS) located anywhere in India, including Tamil Nadu. A CTET certificate does NOT qualify you for Tamil Nadu state government school recruitment.

TNTET (Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test), conducted by the TRB (Teachers Recruitment Board) Tamil Nadu, is required for Tamil Nadu state government school posts.

Some private schools in Tamil Nadu may accept either certificate — check with individual institutions. Candidates targeting both KV and Tamil Nadu state school posts must qualify both CTET and TNTET separately.
