The Report, prepared by the Transport Research Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and highways, discovered that a total of 4,64,910 road accidents were reported by States and Union territories in the calendar year of 2017, claiming 1,47,913 lives and causing injuries to 4,70,975 persons.

In percentage terms, the number of accidents in 2017 was lower by 3.3 percent and injuries 4.8 percent over that of the previous year.

Students must get up early and start from home early to avoid rushing and reaching the bus stop on time. They should board the bus from the designated bus stop in an orderly queue without pushing or running. Once inside the bus, students must behave properly and maintain discipline so as not to distract the driver. Students should get down from the bus only when it has completely stopped and never attempt to jump or step down while the bus is moving. If the driver is not following road safety norms or driving recklessly, students should immediately bring this to the notice of school authorities, parents, or the traffic helpline. Students must never run or rush to catch the bus as this is dangerous. They should not stand on the steps of the bus or lean out of windows. Students must not make unnecessary noise inside the bus as loud sounds may distract the driver and cause accidents. Most importantly, students should never put any part of their body outside the bus window or door, as this can result in serious injuries.
