GroupsThe TNPSC groups (CCSE)
Group 1 (CCSE-I)
The highest cadre — posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner and District Registrar. Three stages: Preliminary, Main and Interview.
Group 2 & 2A (CCSE-II)
Posts such as Sub-Registrar, Assistant Section Officer and Municipal Commissioner (Grade-III). Group 2 has an interview; Group 2A is non-interview. Selection is through a Preliminary and a Main exam.
Group 4 (CCSE-IV)
The entry-level cadre — posts such as Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant, Typist and Bill Collector. A single objective examination decides selection.

Group 2 & 2AGroup 2 & 2A (CCSE-II) Exam Pattern
Preliminary examination
A single objective paper of 200 questions for 300 marks (3 hours) covering General Studies and Aptitude & Mental Ability — used to screen candidates for the Main exam.
Main examination
A descriptive paper (written in Tamil or English) testing General Studies and writing ability. Group 2 then has an Oral Test (interview); Group 2A is decided on the written marks alone.
Group 1Group 1 (CCSE-I) Exam Pattern
Stage 1 — Preliminary
One objective paper (General Studies + Aptitude & Mental Ability) used only for screening; these marks do not count in the final ranking.
Stage 2 — Main (written)
Descriptive papers — General Studies papers plus, for some years, an essay/translation component — written in Tamil or English.
Stage 3 — Interview
An Oral Test. The Main marks plus the interview decide the final merit list.

History & Culture
Indian history, the Indian National Movement, and the history and culture of Tamil Nadu.
Geography
Geography of India with special reference to Tamil Nadu — physical features, climate, resources, agriculture and population.
Polity & Economy
Indian Constitution and polity, governance, Indian economy and the development administration of Tamil Nadu.
Aptitude & Mental Ability
Simplification, percentage, ratio, time and work, basic statistics, logical reasoning and number series.
Current affairs
National and Tamil Nadu current events, schemes, awards, sports and people in the news.
EligibilityWho can apply
Group 4
A pass in the qualification prescribed for the post (commonly SSLC / Higher Secondary, with typing qualifications for Typist/Steno posts), within the age limit set in the notification.
Group 2 & 2A
A bachelor's degree from a recognised university.
Group 1
A bachelor's degree; age and attempt limits vary by category and are set in each notification.
Language
Adequate knowledge of Tamil is generally required; specific posts list their exact language conditions.
