IBPS PO 2025 — Frequently Asked Questions

What is IBPS PO and who conducts it?

IBPS PO is the Probationary Officer recruitment exam conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) to recruit Probationary Officers / Management Trainees for participating public sector banks across India.

Selection happens in three stages: Preliminary exam (online objective) → Main exam (online objective + descriptive English) → Interview. Final merit is based on Mains + Interview; the Prelims is only a qualifying screen.

What is the IBPS PO Prelims syllabus and pattern?

IBPS PO Prelims has 3 sections, 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes with a 20-minute sectional time limit for each section:

1. English Language (30 questions): Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Para Jumbles, Error Spotting, Sentence Improvement, Fill in the Blanks, Word Usage.

2. Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions): Simplification & Approximation, Number Series, Quadratic Equations, Data Interpretation, Percentage, Ratio, Time-Speed-Distance, Profit & Loss, Interest.

3. Reasoning Ability (35 questions): Puzzles, Seating Arrangement, Syllogism, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Coding-Decoding, Inequalities, Order & Ranking.

Negative marking is 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

What is the IBPS PO Mains syllabus?

1. Reasoning & Computer Aptitude · 2. General / Economy / Banking Awareness · 3. English Language · 4. Data Analysis & Interpretation.

Banking & financial awareness and current affairs are tested only in Mains — make sure to add them to your preparation after Prelims.

What is the eligibility criteria for IBPS PO 2025?

Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, with a valid degree certificate at the time of registration. Basic computer literacy is required.

Age Limit: 20 to 30 years. Age relaxation: SC/ST — 5 years; OBC (non-creamy layer) — 3 years; PwBD — 10 years; Ex-servicemen — as per government rules.

Nationality: Indian citizen (or other categories specified in the official notification).

What is the negative marking in IBPS PO?

Yes, IBPS PO has negative marking in the objective sections of both Prelims and Mains:

0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer. Each correct answer carries 1 mark in Prelims. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Strategy tip: With strict 20-minute sectional timing in Prelims, prioritise accuracy and attempt only questions where you can eliminate at least two options. Strong candidates clear the sectional and overall cut-offs with high accuracy rather than maximum attempts.

How to prepare for IBPS PO in 3 months?

Month 1 — Build speed: Quantitative Aptitude (simplification, number series, arithmetic, basic DI) and Reasoning (puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequalities). These decide Prelims, so practise daily with a timer.

Month 2 — English + Banking Awareness: English (reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, error spotting) and start Banking & Financial Awareness (RBI, monetary policy, NEFT/RTGS/IMPS, NABARD/SEBI) for Mains. Read one current-affairs source daily.

Month 3 — Mocks with sectional timing: Daily sectional tests under the 20-minute limit, then 2-3 full mocks per week. Analyse every error and revise weak areas. Speed and accuracy under sectional timing decide the result.
