Sample questions from this chapter

In an LPP, the linear function to be maximised or minimised is the
  1. objective function ✓
  2. constraint
  3. feasible region
  4. decision point
Answer: A. The objective function measures the profit, cost or other target.
Why not B: Confuses restrictions with the quantity optimised.
Why not C: Names the common solution set.
Why not D: Turns variables into a geometric point.
At corners (0,0),(30,0),(20,30),(0,50), maximum of Z=4x+y is
  1. 110
  2. 50
  3. 120 ✓
  4. 0
Answer: C. Corner values are 0,120,110,50; maximum 120 occurs at (30,0).
Why not A: Uses Z at (20,30).
Why not B: Uses Z at (0,50).
Why not D: Chooses the origin.
For the same corners, maximum Z=3x+9y is
  1. 180, attained along the segment joining (15,15) and (0,20) ✓
  2. 180 only at (15,15)
  3. 180 only at (0,20)
  4. 60 at (5,5)
Answer: A. Both adjacent corners give 180, so every point on their edge is optimal.
Why not B: Ignores the second equal optimal corner and segment.
Why not C: Ignores the first equal optimal corner and segment.
Why not D: Chooses the minimum.
