Stage 4: Document Verification and Medical Examination.
Yes, RRB NTPC has negative marking in both CBT 1 and CBT 2:
Negative marking: 1/3 mark (0.33 marks) deducted for each wrong answer. Each correct answer = 1 mark. Unattempted questions = 0 marks (no penalty).
Strategy: With 4 options and 1/3 negative, the expected gain from random guessing = (1/4 × 1) − (3/4 × 1/3) = 0. So blind guessing has zero expected value — neither helps nor hurts statistically. However, if you can eliminate even 1 wrong option, the expected value of guessing turns positive. Aim to attempt 70+ questions with high accuracy.
General guideline: Attempt all questions where you know the answer or can eliminate 2+ options. Skip where you have no idea.
Month 1 — Arithmetic and Reasoning foundations: Cover Mathematics (Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Profit-Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Time-Work, Time-Speed-Distance, Number System, HCF-LCM). Simultaneously build Reasoning basics (Series, Analogies, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction). Practice 30 questions daily from each topic.
Month 2 — GK, Science, and advanced topics: Cover General Awareness (NCERT Class 6–10 History, Geography, Polity, Economy; current affairs — 30 min/day). General Science (Class 8–10 Physics, Chemistry, Biology basics). Complete Maths syllabus (Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Statistics). Advanced Reasoning (Syllogism, Venn Diagrams, Data Interpretation).
Month 3 — Mock tests and revision: Take 2–3 full CBT 1 mock tests per week under timed conditions (90 minutes, no breaks). Analyse every wrong answer. Revise weak topics. For the final 2 weeks, focus only on mock tests and current affairs. Target: 70+ attempted with 80%+ accuracy.
